As with many of the favelas, social isolation is very difficult in favelas outside Sao Paolo. Multiple generations are often packed under one roof and there are few public parks or other public spaces. Same goes for hospitals that can handle large and difficult cases. For healthcare, there are clinics, but no big hospitals.
As Brazil’s crisis unfolds, hospitals become overwhelmed and a sports gym transforms into a temporary hospital. For the poor living in favelas, staying at home and self-isolation are not options.
As a medium for fostering global solidarity, Rio’s Christ the Redeemer statue lit up as a doctor to pay tribute to healthcare workers who are fighting the coronavirus around the world.
