Peninsula restaurant on Nicollet Av gives visibility to the city’s and state’s Malaysian community. The country’s colonial past translates into a mix of ethnicities, including the majority Malays, Chinese and Indians, and this symphony of flavors makes Malaysian cuisine unique. Immigrants of South East Asia descent have been noted as “model minorities” and such perceptions are seen as divisive. Calls have been growing louder for South Asian diasporas, particularly Indians, to speak out against anti-Black racism. In the words of Herveen Singh, an education administration expert from Canada now working at the Zayed University in Dubai: “Essentially, the model minority myth was created to take attention away from the enslavement of Black people and replace it with ‘you’re just not working hard enough’”. Here in Minnesota, Malaysians are among those who have joined cleanup efforts and spoke out against injustice.
