The call for racial justice translated into burning the police department’s 3rd Precinct building. Strong relationships of trust between police and the communities they serve are critical to maintaining public safety and effective policing. With its open windows, transparent entrance, and wide stairs cascading toward the sidewalk, the building was a symbol of what could be. Though Blacks make up 1 in 5 residents in Minneapolis, they account for 60% of the use of force by police. Initiatives such as the Police and Black Men Project at the University of Minnesota aim to “build relationships of trust to promote community safety.”
