In the heart of Phillips Neighborhood, one can find The Grease Pit Bike Shop. This is not your typical shop though. The Grease Pit is a volunteer-run bike shop that teaches bike building, maintenance, and repair in order to promote self-sufficiency and free mobility. As already one of the top 13 cycling cities in the US, Minneapolis is committed to further increasing access to biking in its 2040 Plan. Biking is an affordable means of transportation that picked-up additional devotees due the pandemic and concerns about safety in crowded means of public transportation. Two recent studies suggest that African-Americans’ greater use of public transportation could partly explain their higher rate of Covid-19 deaths. Biking has many health advantages, including positive association with academic performance, as well as economic benefits from reduced healthcare costs.
