The “Stories of almost everyone” exhibit at LA’s Hammer Museum included objects as political commentaries, such as Christodoulos Panayiotou’s Independence Street (2012). Five utility poles from Cyprus expose how a tool of the state to transmit information via power lines was repurposed by citizens as makeshift bulletin boards, visible through the tacks and bits of paper. In South Minneapolis, a street light pole is also a form of communication. Although the research is inconclusive on whether street lighting has an effect on crime, light does make people feel safer when walking at night, which increases the amount of time people walk, reduces social isolation, improves physical and mental well-being and increases community pride. The city of Minneapolis’ 2040 Plan will improve the pedestrian environment, including better street lights in many of the city’s diverse neighborhoods as part of efforts to eliminate disparities.
