The overhaul of Interstate 35W just south of downtown is a $240 million project running over 4 years. New pavement, improved traffic flow, a transit station in the center of the highway, and exit ramps to access Lake Street’s business district are expected to ease transportation woes and better connect the city’s diverse neighborhoods. Pedestrian safety is ensured on overpasses, providing an opportunity to use the 1 hr Americans spend in a day driving and spread messages that remind drivers of pressing social discourses. In the words of Becky Dankowski, South Minneapolis resident and activist: “I am committed to keeping my focus, pushing for justice and real change, and helping others to remember. Please join me on 38th street bridge Tuesdays, 4:30-5:30 through the end of the year.”
