Although exact numbers of Muslim residents in Minnesota are hard to come by (the Census does not ask about religion), estimates show around 120,000 people, many of them Somali. Minnesota’s Da’wah Institute (MDI) was established in February of 2007 by local Muslims from different backgrounds and professions to be an asset in the community by providing religious, educational, and social services. The Institute offers a three year Diploma in Da`wah and Islamic Studies with class instructions in English, Arabic, or Somali. Other services provided include counseling (family, youth, marriage), immigration, hospital and sick visits, youth mentoring, after school programs, and homework help.
