Cub Foods on West Broadway closed temporarily due to damage. The sign outside the store is a poignant reminder of three major investments needed in moving toward racial and social justice: food security, health, and employment, which are interrelated. The African American poverty rate in North Minneapolis (42.0%) is 35.8% higher than the White (Non-Hispanic) poverty rate in the Metropolitan Area as a whole. As noted by Diane Benjamin, this is a community with limited grocery stores and “fast-food outlets and convenience stores serve as the primary source of food. There are no farmer’s markets in the summer. High levels of crime make backyard gardening unsafe.” Organizations such as Northside Fresh are trying to change that by developing networks for a more connected food system.
