The Aliveness Project on Nicollet Avenue has been advocating for people living with HIV for over 30 years through community connections, nutrition, and wellness services. In addition to Black lives lost to police, they are raising awareness about the disproportionate loss of Black trans lives – in 2018, there were at least 26 deaths of transgender or gender non-conforming people in the U.S. due to fatal violence, the majority of whom were Black transgender women. As noted by the Human Rights Campaign “…fatal violence disproportionately affects transgender women of color, and that the intersections of racism, sexism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and unchecked access to guns conspire to deprive them of employment, housing, healthcare and other necessities, barriers that make them vulnerable.”
