Around 15.6% of the population in the Longfellow neighborhood are foreign born–15.8% Black, many of whom are Somali immigrants who arrived to Minnesota in the 1980s to escape civil war. This shop enables residents to wire money abroad to loved ones. In 2017, a record $41 billion was sent by immigrants to their home countries in sub-Saharan Africa. According to the UN, 1 in 9 people globally are supported by funds sent home by migrant workers.
