Sound is hard to block. Unlike one’s eyes which can be diverted or closed, there is not a lot we can do to prevent sound from penetrating the interiors of our houses. As helicopters pass over South Minneapolis, the message for change is also engraved in the air and the sky. Helicopter sound has long been traumatizing to me–it takes me back to the August 14 demonstration in Cyprus where Solomos Solomou was killed in front of our eyes while fighting for justice and freedom. It has been 46 years and Cyprus still remains a divided country and me, a refugee who mourns all we have lost–from our house to our monuments and churches.
