Across the street from the post-office that was destroyed by fire, overwhelmed from smoke is Tubman, an organization offering services from shelter to counseling and in-school programs for youth. Tubman is named after Harriet Tubman, an African American abolitionist and political activist who escaped slavery and used the Underground Railroad network to free others. At a time when crisis centers are overwhelmed with calls and domestic assaults are on the rise due to the pandemic, the shelter provides safety and support to many mothers and children who were evacuated for safety.
