Around 15.6% of the population in the Longfellow neighborhood are foreign born–17.4% are Hispanic and 15.8% Black, many of whom are Somali immigrants who arrived to Minnesota in the 1980s to escape civil war. The area’s post office also serves much of South Minneapolis but to the residents, it is a lifeline of connection to loved ones abroad, the place to send and receive letters, packages, clothing, and other forms of support.
